WATCH THE VIDEO (6 minute edit): PUBLIC TALK IN BRISTOL, UK

The Wikipedia 10th Anniversary Public talk in Bristol – was quite a big technical challenge to help run, as I had to integrate a Live Webcasting platform and design a “micro website” to link and blog from the events as they unfolded.

The “micro website” was hosted on Posterous, which formed the basis of the 10th Anniversary’s coverage online. There we fed it plenty of Blogs, news posts, photo’s, video and audio as it happend during the events..

Sam’s contribution as a volunteer (ProBono) Media Co-ordinator for the Jimmy Wales event in Bristol (Celebrating the 10th Birthday of Wikipedia 15/01/11) was invaluable. His technical & media expertise laid the ground for a number of ideas for the event that i wished to create – making my wishes possible. He played a key role on the video/recording side of all matters to do with the event. His view on the way to maximise the impact of Bristol City Council’s LiveWebcast was priceless – as we got the best out of them as a result. His suggestions about a posterous website as a collection/database for coverage proved invaluable too – as this enabled us to have a record of a fast paced day. His input was a critical factor in the success of the day. This Posterous site (to date) gained over 1,500 visitors +more during the week after it took place, and the hash-tag #wp10 became one of the UK’s most popular search terms on Twitter at the time of the event. – Steve Virgin, Board Director & Trustee, Wikimedia UK / Wikipedia

For the 10th Anniversary of Wikipedia – I was involved with the following tasks:

Pre-Event

- Setup the “micro website” using Posterous. CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE SITE

Bristol

- Meet Jimmy Wales at Bristol Cathedral School, and help with his 1hour talk to the students of the school, within Bristol Cathedral. I filmed his talk, and uploaded this online.

- Help run the Press room at The Watershed, including uploading Photo’s and video from his talk at Bristol Cathedral.

- Run and Produce the LIVE WEBCAST of the Public talk at The Victoria Rooms at Bristol University.

- Take questions from the viewers watching the Live Webcast, and feed a few of them to Jimmy Wales.

- Record the Public talk in audio, and make this into a Podcast to be made available via the Wikipedia website. (You can listen to this in the sidebar, on the left)

London

- Accompany Jimmy Wales and the team, via Train to London.

- Attend the Wikipedia 10th Anniversary Party, held at the Louise T Blouin Foundation in West London (the attendance included Jimmy Wales, Richard Dawkins (Author), Peter Gabriel (Musician), and Robert Preston (BBC News Journalist) and Cory Doctorow.

- Talk to the many attendees at the party, about the celebrations and public talk that took place in Bristol during the daytime.

Leo Laporte currently owns and operates a online netcast network called, TWiT.tv. The name is derived from the network’s award-winning flagship podcast This Week in Tech, or TWiT, which is hosted by Laporte along with a rotating panel of guests.

In August 2011, Sam Downie from Dsoundz Media had an opportunity in visiting the HQ of TWiT TV, to meet up with Leo, Lisa, Alex, Tom, Brent, Jason and the many others who work at TWiT TV – to gain an insightful look inside this popular international NetCast Network. The video here, presented by Sam Downie – provides you with a guide to TWiT as well as a in-depth interview, with Leo Laporte.

What is TWiT ? and This Week In Tech…?

“This Week in Tech” hosted by Leo Laporte, remains one of the most popular podcasts on iTunes and other podcast subscription services, as evidenced by winning an award at the November 2005 Podcasting Expo in California for the year’s best podcast and by its over 280,000 weekly downloads via iTunes.

What are NetCasts ?

Leo Laporte prefers to call his shows “netcasts,” saying:

I’ve never liked the word podcast. It causes confusion … people have told me that they can’t listen to my shows because they ‘don’t own an iPod’ … I propose the word ‘netcast.’ It’s a little clearer that these are broadcasts over the Internet. It’s catchy and even kind of a pun.

Want to know more? and Watch TWiT LIve ?
Visit the website at : http://live.twit.tv
and see the latest show. Or catch them on iTunes and download them for free, just search for “TWIT TV”.
